K-beauty began with a knock at the door.

Long before it was a shelf in a shop, Korean skincare was a conversation. Someone knocked, sat down at your kitchen table, and taught you how to look after your skin.

Sixty years on, that’s still what we’re trying to do.

The products made it to Australia. The teaching didn’t.

In 1962, a Korean cosmetics company started sending trained women out to people’s homes. They weren’t there to push a bottle. They’d look at your skin, ask you questions, and explain what to do about it. The company built Korea’s first beauty counselling system to train them properly, and by 1980 there were more than sixteen thousand of them working across the country.

Then those women went home and taught their daughters, and that’s the part that really built K-beauty. It was never one clever ingredient. It was knowledge moving from one generation to the next. The famous ten-step routine wasn’t dreamed up in a marketing meeting, it was a household habit that got handed down until everybody knew it.

Somewhere on the way to Australia, the products crossed over and the teaching stayed behind. So you end up buying a barrier cream built for a Korean winter because a fifteen-second video promised it would change everything, and of course it doesn’t, because nobody ever asked what your skin was actually like.

That’s the gap we exist in. Australia has no shortage of K-beauty. What it’s short of is someone to explain it.

We can’t claim any of that history as ours. We just think those women had it right.

An aunty and a niece

Mei started Skinsation because of her own skin. Australian summers left it dry and flaking, nothing on the local shelf helped, and it took Korean skincare to finally sort it out after the better part of a decade. The products mattered less to her than the relief of finally understanding what her skin needed, and it frustrated her that nobody had ever explained it.

Sophia is her niece and the second half of the business. She came at the same problem from the colour side, working on the idea that what suits you is a fact about you rather than a trend you’ve fallen behind on.

We’re both certified colour analysis consultants. Undertone, contrast, depth. Once you know yours, you stop guessing.

Everyone who gives skin advice at Skinsation is trained by Mei before they serve a customer on their own. Not trained on the till, trained on skin. How to look at it, what to ask, what the ingredients actually do, and when the right answer is that you don’t need this one.
